Teaching

I have over 6 years’ documented experience in the teaching and supervision of students at university level. I have supervised nine undergraduate and graduate students including two students during their master’s theses. Since 2012, I have taught a variety of small-size lab courses covering the topics of thermodynamics and kinetics, presented parts of two seminars for undergraduate lectures with more than 100 students, as well as a workshop for members of my group on my own initiative. During that time, I have advised students, assigned grades and graded reports, as well as supervised and graded exams.

Feedback from students

“I have stayed in Aachen for three months. Mr. Kottgen Julius helped me with everything about my stay. Advice on my daily life and research was very helpful for me. I appreciate all he did.”

Ryota Sonoda, Tokyo Institute of Technology, research stay abroad, November 2015 – January 2016

“I studied in Aachen for 3 month, and Julius Köttgen was my supervisor. He is always kind and takes good care of people. My English skill is not very good but he talked to me very slowly, so it was easy to understand his advice. He taught me many things carefully, not only experimental works but also the German culture. In addition, he made a time for me no matter how busy he is. Thanks to him, I had great time in Aachen.”

Yu Hashimoto, Nagoya Institute of Technology, research stay abroad, October 2015 – December 2015

“Thank you for helping me when I start this program. Thank you again for your help for my study in Aachen. Thank you for your help.”

Hyung-Jong Choi, Korea University, Seoul, research stay abroad, July 2015 – September 2015

“Julius Koettgen stood by my side during the six months of working on my master thesis and has been of great assistance to me. As a supervisor he was always reliable and helpful but nevertheless he left enough room for my own ideas and approaches. He was reachable for any questions and always had a technically experienced answer at the ready.
During the actual writing of my thesis he helped me to identify and formulate important results in a comprehensible and compact manner. His suggestions for improvement were well thought-out and in this way he shared his wealth of academic knowledge with me. I can summarise by saying that having Julius as my supervisor was a good experience during which I learned a great deal.”

Fabian Draber, RWTH Aachen University, master thesis, January 2015 – August 2015

“During the time of preparation for and actually writing my thesis Julius Koettgen has been of tremendous help and assistance to me. He came along side me during my research. He provided just the right supervision and guidance without mirco managing me. He left me total creative freedom in the process and was still helpful with answering questions. At the end of my research he discussed the results with me in detail. Throughout the writing of my thesis he would periodically check in with me just to insure that I was still on topic and the right time frame. Overall I would have to say it was a good experience and I was glad to have him as a supervisor.”

Gerald Dück, RWTH Aachen University, research internship and master thesis, January 2014 – March 2015
